From Inception To Glory: An Infographic Guide To The Tour de France's History and Modern Triumphs

About this project

Introduction

The infographic was made for Maven Analytics’ Tour de France challenge.

Participants were asked to play the role of a data visualization expert at the Amaury Sport Organisation, the company that organizes the annual Tour de France cycling race.

The main objectives of the infographic are to increase the Tour de France’s popularity around the world by creating an infographic-style visual to educate new viewers, highlight the magnitude of the event, and build anticipation for this year’s race.

Dataset

Most of the data used in the infographic was provided by Maven Analytics. This data includes historical information about the Tour de France from 1903 to 2022, encompassing details about the race's finishers, stages, tours, and winners.

Layout

The main concept of the infographic is to showcase the history of Tour de France and its present-day status.

Since the task is to create an infographic, I decided to use an infographic-style newspaper layout, incorporating the two themes of the challenge – sports and history.

I searched for design inspirations from the internet and opted for colors that resemble old-fashioned newspapers, hence the green and antique paper color scheme for the infographic.

Analysis

I decided to divide my analysis and align it with the challenge’s three main objectives:

Educate new viewers

In order to give a background of the competition, I decided to use the Tour de France’s history as a way to give new viewers a glimpse of the earlier editions of the race. I also took advantage of the dataset since most of it are historical data.

I used several data visualizations under this objective:

1.Timeline – to show some of the race’s historical events since its inception in 1903 up until 2023.

2.Column chart – to show the growth of participants over the past years.

3.Line chart – to compare the past races’ completion rate versus total distance over time.

4.Bar chart and multi-row cards – to show the most notable winners of the race.

Highlight the magnitude of the event

I treated this objective as similar to the question “What’s at stake?” for this year’s Tour de France, and used several data visualizations for it.

1.Cards – to show the prize money, number of participants, and number of teams for this year’s race.

2.Area chart – to give a glimpse of how the stages of the entire race look like.

Build anticipation for this year’s race

Lastly, this objective was treated as similar to the question “What can we expect?” for this year’s Tour de France. I decided to analyze and predict the possible winner of this year’s race by using the data from the 2020, 2021, and 2022 editions of the Tour de France.

I used a scatter chart to give the viewers an idea of who among the participants are most likely to win the race.

Note:

I only used the free version of Power BI desktop and do not have the access to publish the report online. Kindly refer to the LinkedIn post to view the infographic more clearly.
