About this project

Northwind Traders supplies top-quality gourmet meal products to cafes, restaurants and specialty food retailers all around the world.

  • The goal of this project is to identify key performance indicators that highlight performance metrics in sales trends, product orders & revenue, top customers and business costs in processing and shipping orders.
  • The data is stored in 7 CSV files containing 28 columns and using the provided data dictionary, the primary and foreign keys were identified first.
  • The files were then loaded into Microsoft Power BI and using the power query, column titles wer verified and data cleanup and validation was conducted to ensure no erroneous rows nor values were loaded into the report.

Here are the insights and KPIs retrieved from the loaded datasets;

  1. The Northwind Sales team is made up of 9 employees (1 VP Sales, 2 Sales Managers & 6 Sales Reps) who handled 830 orders between 2013 & 2015
  2. Northwind supplies 91 customers from various industries in 21 countries
  3. There are 77 items in the product line, with 8 having been discontinued
  4. The company has generated approximately $1.4M gross revenue over the time frame, netting $1.3M in revenue after discounts applied (Average discoun rate was 6.5%)
  5. There were 51000 units shipped in the 830 orders, with an average revenue of $1525 per order
  6. The shipping department operates at a 96% fulfillment efficiency rate, with an average span of 8.5 days. We continue to strive for 100%.
  7. Speedy Express handled the most deliveries for us while United Package achieved the highest revenue generated per order
  8. Our sales team averaged $150K in revenue brought in between 9 of them, with Margaret Peacock generating a quarter million in revenue while Steven Buchanan brought in about 30% of that value.
  9. Beverages(21%) and Dairy products(18.5%) are the 2 highest revenue generators in the product category line, while Grains & Cereals accounted for 7.4% of the income
  10. When it comes to individual products, Cote de Blaye brought in about $150K in revenue, 70% more than the next product; Thuringer Rostbratwurst and Raclette Courdevault bringing in the 3rd highest revenue at $76K
  11. There are 5 products that brought in less than $3k in revenue individually, namely; Chocolade, Geitost, Genene Shouyu, Laughing Lumberjack and Longlife Tofu
  12. The company received a lot of orders from USA, Germany, Brazil, France and the UK who round out the Top 5 in that category
  13. With regards to spending however, USA, Germany, Austria, Brazil and France compose the Top 5
  14. Lastly, our top individual customers in terms of spending are as follows; QUICK-Stop, Save-a-lot Markets, Ernst Handel (all bringing in more than $110K revenue), Hungry Owl, Rattlesnake Canyon Grocery (both more than $50K), Hanari Carnes, Folk och, Mere Paillarde, Koniglich Essen and Queen Cozinha round out the Top 10 customers for Northwind Traders
