Parental Leave Policies

Tableau public dashboard

About this project

I will be working as a Data Visualization Specialist at an Online Business Journal to create visuals for the “Parental Leave Policies” dataset. The dataset is a csv single table file containing 1601 records.

The "Parental Leave Policies" contains 6 fields which are Company, Industry, Paid Maternity Leave (in weeks), Unpaid Maternity Leave (in weeks), Paid Paternity Leave (in weeks) and Unpaid Paternity Leave (in weeks).

To understand the Parental Leave Policy, these are few of the questions I will answering in my dashboard.

  1. How many countries and industries are available in the dataset?

  2. What is the average paid & unpaid maternity & paternity leave?

  3. What are the top 10 companies with the highest paid & unpaid maternity & paternity leave?

  4. What are the top 10 industries with the highest paid & unpaid maternity & paternity leave?

  5. Total length of maternity and paternity leave.

Data cleaning was done in Microsoft Excel and the cleaned dataset was imported into Tableau.

In the analysis, I created the “Leave type” parameter using the Paid Maternity Leave, Unpaid Maternity, Paid Paternity Leave and Unpaid Paternity Leave fields and applied them to the following visuals (average leave type, top 10 companies, top 10 industries). To view any of the three visuals, click the drop down on the parameter button at the top right corner of the dashboard.

Calculations was also done to find overall maternity and paternity leave.

Here are my key findings:

·There are 1600 companies and 186 industries in the dataset

·Unpaid paternity leave type has the lowest average value (0.31) among the leave types

·MTX Group Inc company offers long paid maternity leave

·Transportation: Bus industry offers the longest paid maternity leave

·Dynatrace company offers long unpaid maternity leave.

·Printing industry offers the longest unpaid maternity leave

·Grant Thornton company offers the longest paid paternity leave

·Healthcare: Telemedicine industry offers the longest paid paternity leave

·McDonald’s company offers the longest unpaid paternity leave

·Natural Resources: Renewable & Environment industry offers the longest unpaid paternity leave

·96.69% of companies have paid maternity leave policy while 3.31% do not have

·16.05% of companies have paid paternity leave policy while 83.95% do not have

·Dynatrace company offers the longest overall maternity leave

·Grant Thornton company offers the longest overall paternity leave

·Transportation: Bus industry offers the longest overall maternity leave

·Healthcare: Telemedicine industry offers the longest overall paternity leave

·Companies such as LAC-Group, Flatiron Health, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dropbox, GitHub offers the same duration for both maternity and paternity leave

·98.25% of companies have maternity leave policy while 1.75% do not have

·16.99% of companies have paternity leave policy while 83.01% do not have

Recommendations

Measures should be put in place by the government to ensure that the paternity leave policy is enforced and also at a reasonable duration because Paternity leave is also important as maternity leave for the family’s overall wellbeing.
