Project Overview
Hi #DataFam,
I am participating in the #mavenfamilyleavechallenge organized by @MavenAnalytics. Please find below my submission for the challenge.
THE CHALLENGE
As part of “Women’s History Month” in the United States, Maven Business Journal is writing a piece about parental leave policies across the business world. As the company’s Data Visualization Specialist, I have been asked to create a 1-page report using impactful charts, visuals & infographics as supporting content for the article.
TOOLS USED
1. Power BI
2. Excel
THE REPORT
To maximize space and overcome the limitation of presenting the visuals on only 1-page per the challenge requirement, the following Power BI features were used to summarize the findings:
DATA PREPARATION
Data cleaning and transformation were done in Power BI’s Power Query Editor. Data types were corrected where necessary and calculated columns were created for paid and unpaid parental leave duration.
KEY FINDINGS
Maternity Leave:
The average paid and unpaid maternity leave duration was 11 and 7 weeks respectively.
The top 3 Companies with the highest paid maternity leave duration (52 weeks) were American Income, ASML, and Bitdefender.
The top 3 Companies with the highest unpaid maternity leave duration were Bitdefender (52 weeks), Dynatrace (52 weeks) & ASML (40 weeks).
An un-named industry, Conglomerates, and Consulting Services were the top 3 Industries with the highest paid maternity leave duration (52 weeks).
Accounting Services, Business Services and Consulting Services were the top 3 Industries with the highest unpaid maternity leave duration (52 weeks).
Paternity Leave:
The average paid and unpaid paternity leave duration was 7 and 8 weeks respectively.
The top 3 Companies with the highest paid paternity leave duration were Grant Thornton (51 weeks), LAC-Group (35 weeks), and Flatiron Health (30 weeks).
The top 3 Companies with the highest unpaid paternity leave duration were MacDonalds (29 weeks), DropBox (24 weeks) & Medidata Solutions (24 weeks).
Accounting Services (51 weeks), Information (35 weeks) & Healthcare (30 weeks) were the top 3 Industries with the highest paid maternity leave duration.
Hospitality (29 weeks), Pharmacies & Drugs (24 weeks) & Technology (24 weeks) Services were the top 3 Industries with the highest unpaid maternity leave.
Family / Parental Leave:
Grant Thornton (102 weeks), LAC-Group (68 weeks), and Flatiron Health (60 weeks) were the top-3 companies that had the highest paid parental leave duration.
These top-3 companies fell under the following industries Accounting Services, Information Services, and Healthcare.
Finally, all companies (100%) offered paid maternity leave while only 18.1% offered paid paternity leave. Most companies (93.1%) offered unpaid maternity leave while only 4% offered unpaid paternity leave.
Key Recommendation:
Companies need to give fathers more paid and unpaid time off, as paternal presence is as important as maternal presence in promoting bonding and ensuring the overall development (cognitive, emotional, mental, and physical) of the child.
