About this project

Just finished working on the first draft of the "Space Missions" Dataset. I wanted to create a dashboard similar to Tableau's IronViz competitions.

A similar challenge was organized by Maven Analytics a few months back which I missed 😅. The dataset used for this dashboard is scraped by me so not the same as the original. Through this dataset, I aimed to scrutinize all the space missions to date and create a dashboard for interactive education purposes. Analyzing the data was an enthralling experience that stimulated my imagination and offered a great opportunity to enhance my analytical and design skills.

These are my notes:

Step 1: Scraping all the mission data

I was not happy with the existing space mission dataset on Kaggle. It didn't contain a lot of supporting information as well as the fact that it lacked recent missions. I decided to scrape approx 7000 pages from different websites to create the final dataset. In order to enrich the dataset, I also used other publicly available satellite data.

There were a lot of hours spent cleaning the scraped data and getting it into a usable form. So won't go onto the specifics here.

Step 2: Experimenting with Design Elements

I experimented with different design elements to create a report emulating a Newspaper style infographic look. Thus, I played around with a grayscale look. For this, I took inspiration from a variety of websites like Dribble, Behance, Tableau public, etc.

I am far from analyzing the whole dataset (plan to do it slowly 😅). Also, there are several design ideas that I couldn't implement due to insufficient exposure to Deneb and Charticulator (also plan to learn and implement).

Hope you like this draft of the space missions. Feedback and comments are always welcomed! Thank you for reading, and I look forward to seeing you in my next post! 😁
