Automotive Recall Figures

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides automotive recall data by manufacturer dating all the way back to 1966.

This is how they visualize it on their site:

What was interesting to me was that they chose to display totals (not percentages) in their interactive pie chart... so I decided to flip the script!

I set out to create a static, narrative-driven bar chart that shows percentages (not totals).

The insight that stuck out to me the most while exploring the data was the amount of recalls and affected vehicles from US manufaturers compared to the rest, so I used the "Big Three" (Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler) as the focus of my story:
