Retail Store Report

About this project

This analysis provides a comprehensive over view of a retail store. With transactions across different products categories. The dataset came in a CSV file format with 240 rows and 9 columns. Each row represents a single transaction with detailed information such as transaction ID, date, product category, product name, units sold, unit price, total revenue, region and payment method.

undefinedApproach - EDA

The dataset was loaded into MySQL with online sales data as the name of the dataset to check for duplicate values which if identified will help in having an accurate analysis.

undefinedWhat are the business case:

  1. Can we see our KPI's? is it possible to visualise our revenue by month and day?

  2. Can you identify the best performing products across each categories? How much revenue, units sold and transactions have the products generate within this period?

  3. Which products category thrive most across the regions?

  4. Which regions generate the most revenue?

  5. Which payment method do our customers prefer and which region do they reside?

  6. Can we see transactions across the regions?

Key Insights:

1.

undefinedThe retail store made $81k in revenue. January was a standout month for the retail store generating $14.5k, although the number of transactions saw a negative downturn selling 68 units and processing 31 transactions. July was the poorest performing months generating $6.8k revenue, with 53 units sold, although the number of transactions saw a positive upturn remaining consistent at 31

Revenue generated by day and time

undefinedOverall, peak month is January and peak day is Tuesday.

  1. Best Performing Product Across Each Categories

undefinedThere was a significant competition among product types, including the Spalding NBA Street Basketball and Yeti Rambler Tumbler in the Sports category; Eufy Robovac 11s, Instant Pot Duo, and Keurig K-Elite Coffee Maker in the Home Appliances category; and Amazon Echo Dot 4th Gen and Anker PowerCore Portable Charger in the Electronics category. In the Beauty category, products like Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, Glossier Boy Brow, L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream, and L'Oréal Revitalift Serum also competed. I chose to focus on the product type that first reached the highest number of units sold, using the date column to guide the selection.

undefined These products contributed significantly by generating $1K in sales revenue, 32 units sold and 7 transactions processed. Their combined performance accounted for a large portion of the store's success, particularly in key markets such as Asia and North America . Consistent demand, helped drive their strong sales performance.

  1. Popularity of Products Categories Across Regions

undefinedClothing performed better than sports products in Asia, which

could indicate a growing interest in fashion or everyday apparel over specialized sports gear. This might be linked to lifestyle changes.

  • Books Category overtaking electronics suggests a shift toward

more intellectual or leisure-focused consumption in North America. This could be driven by a rise in reading habits.

  • Home Appliances performed slightly better than beauty products

could suggest that European consumers are more focused on improving their home environments, possibly due to remote work.

  1. Regional Revenue

undefinedNorth America’s Dominance in revenue generation

suggests a mature market with strong purchasing power and consumer confidence.

  • Asia’s Performance shows potential for future growth,

especially with its expanding middle class and increasing e-commerce penetration.

  • Europe’s Moderate Performance could be influenced by

regulatory complexities and cultural preferences, but it remains a valuable market with sustainability-conscious consumers.

  1. Payment Preference Across Regions

undefinedPayment trends vary across regions, influenced by consumer preferences, technological infrastructure and financial regulations.

Digital wallet service like PayPal; and credit cards thrive the most in Europe and North America respectively, while Asia prefers both credit and debit cards for payment.

  1. Transactions Across Regions

undefinedEqual transaction volumes among Asia, Europe, and North America can reflect balanced market dynamics influenced by consumer behavior, economic conditions, and effective marketing strategies.

Observation:

The data didn't contain a column for product descriptions. This column could play a pivotal role in the analysis process. As it stands now, insights are limited because the product description column is missing. This column could enable the analyst to explore the data more thoroughly and make insightful analysis, which would later lead to informed, data-driven decision-making.

Recommendations:

  • Following the poor performance of beauty products in Europe, it is recommended that the retail outlets shift marketing efforts towards younger demographics. A targeted campaign aimed at young individuals will help revitalize interest and boost sales in this product category.

  • For European stores, an alternative strategy could focus on offering sports items and electronics at discounted prices during major events such as the Euro competition or UEFA Nations League. These events draw large audiences, providing a prime opportunity to generate increased revenue by aligning product discounts with consumer interests.

  • Additionally, it is crucial to expand payment options in European outlets by integrating debit and credit card platforms. This will provide customers with more flexibility in payment methods, potentially encouraging more frequent and higher-value purchases.
