Box Office Movies

This dataset was gotten from kaggle. The dataset contains 20 columns and 68 rows. I used excel to check for duplicate values and also check for empty cell using the countblank function. Then I loaded the data into PowerBI, use DAX to carry out some calculations such as total budget and total box office gross.

Business Case

• Who are the top 10 directors with the highest box office gross
• Which movie is the most expensive
• Which movie made it big at the box office
• How did box office preformed over the years

Key Insight

• Russo brothers top the list of directors with the most expensive movies. They have directed 4 movies with a combined budget of $1.1bn, making a whopping $6.7bn in box office gross and achieving IMDb score of 32.30. Then there is Marc Webb with $420M budget spent across 2 movies and a significant $1.5bn box office gross an attaining IMDb score of 13.50

• Marvel studios movie "Avengers: Endgame" holds the top spot as the most expensive movie produced in the past 26 years.

• Marvel studios movie "Avengers: Endgame" directed by Russo brothers pulled a significant $2.8bn box office gross from a $400M budget. This significant gap between budget and box office gross translates to a remarkable profit, making "Avengers: Endgame" the most profitable movie in 26 years.

• The year 2018 was significant for movies showing on the big screen. A total of $5.65bn was made from 5 movies 'Black Panther', 'Avengers: Infinity War', 'Venom', 'Deadpool' and 'Ant-Man and the Wasp'. Marvel studios released 3 movies, while Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox released one movie each.

• Box office gross plummeted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "The New Mutants, a movie owned by 20th Century Fox, made $44.60M in box office gross"
