Massachusetts General Hospital - KPI Report

About this project

In this Maven Hospital Challenge, I am an Analytics Consultant for Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

I have been tasked to build a high-level KPI report for the executive team, based on a subset of patient records from 2011 to 2022. The report will give stakeholders visibility into the hospitals performance while answering the following questions:

  • How many patients have been admitted or readmitted over time?

From the data provided, the hospital has admitted 974 distinct patients during the study time. 2021 has the overall maximum number of distinct patients admitted equaling to 694. On average 512 distinct patients were admitted per year.

  • How long are patients staying in the hospital, on average?

On average patients are spending 7.27 hours in the hospital. There are many reasons affecting this number as different illnesses require different levels of attention and time. This parameter should be studied per admission reason/procedure to identify why patients tend to spend longer on some admissions.

  • How much is the average cost per visit?

On average, it costs $3,640 per hospital visit. It should be noted that some procedures require patients to spend longer in the hospital hence costing them more. Also, different procedures require different levels of expertise, equipment, medication etc. We should expect same procedures to cost the same on average, this requires a separate study to identify why the same procedure would cost different amounts on different occasions.

  • How many procedures are covered by insurance?

A total of 27891 admissions were conducted during the study period. 51.29% (14305) were covered by insurance while the remainder 48.71% (13586) were noninsured.

  • How much revenue was made during this period?

A total of $101.51M was made during this period. 30.63% ($31.10M) from insurance payments while 69.37% ($70.42M) was covered by the patients

  • What is the patient's readmission rate?

87.68% of the patients were readmitted to the hospital. This shows the royalty they have towards the hospital and the trust in the services offered. But what about the remaining 12.32%? The hospital efforts should be directed towards increasing the readmission rate. Marketing?? Improved services?? etc.

  • Which age group has the highest number of admissions?

The age group >90 years has the highest number of admissions (12.1K) followed by 81 - 90 years (4.6K). In general, the number of admissions reduce as the age bracket goes down.

  • Based on the data, which race has the highest number of patients and admissions?

Number of patients in reducing order: Whites (680), Blacks, Asians, Others, Hawaiian, Native.

  • Other take aways:

Suffolk county leads in number of patients, revenue and admissions, while Essex trails.

Female and male patients are almost equal in numbers.

80% of the patients are married.

2014 was the peak performance year.
