This is my analysis of the results of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey from 2014 to 2022.
The goal of this analysis was to find out the impact on the survey to improve the hospital experience.
The most concerning areas that require improvement are highlighted on the National Results page, along with data on the response rates.
The report also has a State Results page where the user can explore the survey result on a state level, and compare state results to the national average. This page offers hints on which areas of the hospitals in the state are most in need of improvement, as well as showing which areas have improved since 2014.
The results of the analysis shows that the response rate is very low (and continuously decreasing since the start of the survey). Concerning areas on a national level are Communication and Responsiveness, while Hospital Rating and Recommend Ratings have remained somewhat static of the years.
On a state level there is a wide disparity in the quality of care from state to state. For example, in 2022, Iowa shows results several percentage points above the national average (+6.9% in Overall Hospital Rating), while Florida is the opposites (-5.1% in Overall Hospital Rating).
Overall the national results have decreased from 2014 to 2022.
The conclusion of this analysis is to put the main focus on lower performing states, in order to get the national average up. Response rates also need to get much better in order to provide correct and more complete data.
