[FINALIST] Maven Tour de France Challenge (July 2023)

This is my submission for the Maven Analytics' July23 Challenge. The task was to create an infographic-style visual to educate new viewers, highlight the magnitude of the event, and build anticipation for this year's Tour de France.

To complete the challenge, I used two (2) types of infographics: timeline and head-to-head comparison.

Timeline – I presented the timeline in the form of a racetrack and populated it with 21 (the number of stages in the Tour!) interesting facts about the Tour that I extracted from the provided data. I used exactly 21 events because this is the number of the stages in the race.

• The 20 distinct facts I associated with the respective year and ordered them chronologically.
• The last - the 21st fact - I left vacant for the most prominent fact in 2023 as at the time of the submission Tour de France was not over.
• The events range from: “the smallest/largest winning margin” to something more intricate as “the cyclist with the most wins and all of the wins are in consecutive years”. I decided to place these records/events on the outer side of the “racetrack” to add a symbolic meaning to the past events because they are shaping the current and future events/performances.

Comparison - I used the head-to-head comparison of the two (2) favorites for this year’s edition of Tour de France to create a visual comparison of their performance in 2023 & 2022. To compare and contrast the dynamics of their performance throughout the race, I used the detailed ranking for each stage from the official site of Tour de France.

• Chart - I used a line chart, blew up the markers, and added a smoothed line for artistic/ visual appeal.
• x-axis Labels - instead of using the dates the respective stages were held, I put small icons to denote the type of the stages to add another layer of detail to it.
• Betting Odds - To add another dimension to the analysis of the this year's race for the trophy, I included a small visual to capture the dynamics of the betting odds as the race progressed. Betting odds are often used to measure/predict sports performances.
