IMDb Movie Dashboard with Excel

About this project

My husband and I love watching movies on the weekends, but we often get into debates on what movies to watch! In my experience, the most important movie qualities are genre, rating, and IMDb scores. Using these metrics, I made a dashboard to help us narrow down our movie search and make a data-driven decision.

The process:

-First, I did some data cleaning and adjusting using a copy of the raw data in Excel. This included creating some new columns using VLOOKUP, and YEAR.

-Since IMDb scores is usually the first thing I consider when choosing a movie, I created a pie chart analyzing the count of IMDb score buckets by genre. In the dashboard, you will see an IMDb slicer that allows you to sort the data by a score range.

-Next, I made a pivot table and chart analyzing the top 5 genres based on # of titles. This will help the user determine what genre has the most titles.

-Then, I made a pivot table/chart looking at genre by the count of ratings and filtered it to only include G, PG, PG-13, and R.

-Finally, revenue is often an accurate indicator of success, so I made a visualization of Gross Revenue by rating and I added an additional metric showing Release Year. This will allow a user to see what movie ratings brought in the most revenue by year.

To conclude, at our next family movie night, I will likely be choosing something that falls within the IMDb score of 6.1 or higher, that falls under the genre of Comedy, and is rated PG-13.
