TASK
Prepare a report that compares the batting and bowling performance of teams in 2022 and 2023 to assess the impact of players who were present in IPL 2022 but suffered injuries in IPL 2023. The report highlight the positive and negative impacts of these players had on their respective teams and to determine if like-for-like replacements were secured by teams.
APPROACH
Data Collection: The data for injured and replaced players, as well as team and player performance in 2022 and 2023, was collected and stored in Excel format.
Data Processing: To analyze the performance of injured players, the IPL 2022 dataset was filtered to include only the records of injured players. Similarly, for replaced players' performance, the IPL 2023 dataset was filtered to include only the records of replaced players.
Data Analysis: The analysis involved calculating the percentage contribution of players to their respective teams for both injured and replaced players. Additionally, the average runs scored and wickets taken by each team in both seasons were computed to facilitate a comparison.
Visualization and Report: To visually represent comparison of team performance in 2022 and 2023, a bar chart was created using Tableau. The final report includes the bar chart, along with detailed explanations of the impact of injured players on the team and the impact of replaced players on their respective teams.
CHALLENGES
One of the challenges faced was identifying the replaced players and determining which player actually played in the position of the injured player.
SOLUTIONS
To address this challenge, the role of each player was considered. For batsmen, the batting position was taken into account, while for bowlers, the bowler type (fast bowler, spinner, etc.) and the phase in which they bowled were considered. By analyzing these factors, the appropriate replacement players were identified and their performance was evaluated accordingly.
CONCLUSION
The report provides insights into the performance differences observed between the two seasons, taking into account the influence of injured and replaced players on team dynamics. The visualization aids in effectively conveying the comparative team performance across the two years.
