The Challenge …
As a Data Visualization Specialist at an online business journal, to create an impactful visual to compliment a piece on parental leave policies across the business world as part of Women’s History Month in the United States.
The Approach …
I decided to provide an overview of the Parental Benefits offered by the participating companies to gain insights on how competitive their policies are.
The Visual …
I created a visual with several elements to be able to tell the story and add a creative element as well.
Used jitter plots to display the distribution of all data points for Total Maternity (paid + unpaid leave in weeks) and Total Paternity (paid + unpaid leave in weeks) side by side.
Added some basic statistics to summarize the data, make comparisons, and zoom in further into the Maternity Policies for more insights on the offered benefits. To visualize the latter, I used pie charts.
To complete the story, added a brief presentation of the Top 6 companies with the most generous parental policies.
· To rank the companies, I calculated a weighted score to put more weight on the paternity leave (both paid & unpaid) as well as on the paid leave (both for maternity and paternity leaves). The reason for that is that paternity leave is still more of an exception than the norm & paid leave is a more beneficial type of parental leave, which still not all of the companies provide.
· To compliment the ranking and provide additional context, I added some basic info about each of the companies (source: wikipedia): the industry they operate in, the location of their headquarter (country), and the number of employees (where available!).
