About this project

About the dataset:

  • This dataset contains a CSV table with 1,600 records, one for each company
  • Each record contains the company's name & industry, as well as crowdsourced information on the paid & unpaid weeks off they offer as part of both their maternity & paternity leave policies (when available)

Data Pre-processing:

  • There were N/A values in the dataset for unpaid maternity leave, and paid and unpaid paternity leave.
  • Duplicates were there in the company column.

Useful Insights gained from the datasets:

  • There are 1,600 companies across 185 industries.
  • The total paid weeks of maternity leave is 19,576.5, with an average of 10.9% compared to an average of 1.3% for paternity leave.
  • The transportation industry offers the highest paid maternity leave, with 52 weeks, while the security industry offers the lowest, with 11 weeks.
  • According to our analysis, 89% of companies offer paid maternity leave, while only 11% offer paid paternity leave. Additionally, 95% of companies offer unpaid maternity leave, with only 5% offering unpaid paternity leave.
  • The healthcare industry, specifically telemedicine, offers the best-paid paternity leave.

Conclusion:

We analyzed 1,600 companies across 185 industries and found that 89% offer paid maternity leave, but only 11% offer paid paternity leave. The average duration of maternity leave is 10.9 weeks, compared to 1.3 weeks for paternity leave. The transportation industry offers the highest paid maternity leave, while the security industry offers the lowest. The healthcare industry offers the best-paid paternity leave.

Our findings suggest that there is a significant gender-based disparity in leave policies across industries, with mothers receiving more paid leave than fathers. To improve gender equality in the workplace, companies should consider increasing paternity leave benefits, as well as offering more flexible leave policies that support both mothers and fathers in balancing work and family responsibilities.
