Introduction:
Netflix as we all know is one of the biggest streaming companies that offers a vast library of movies, TV shows, and original content. The data consist of content added/produced to Netflix from 2008 to 2020.
This project was visualized with Tableau.
Insights:
- The majority of the content on Netflix is Movies which take up 68.42% of the total content.
- The United States of America has the largest proportion of content on Netflix, followed by India.
- A Sharp Decline in added/produced content in 2019&2020 due to COVID-19.
- Documentaries followed by Stand-Up Comedy movies have the biggest number of content on Netflix within the given period.
- Children & Family movies & Comedies, international movies take the title of least content within the given period.
- Most content on Netflix is rated TV-MA or TV-14. TV-14 means the program contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years of age and TV-MA these programs are intended to be viewed by mature, adult audiences and may be unsuitable for children under 17.
Conclusion:
Netflix has seen increasing numbers in content and by default subscribers as well starting noticeably in 2015 and slightly dropping in 2019/2020, Movies take the bigger chunk of the content with almost 2.5 folds the TV shows with rating TV-MA or TV-14 taking more than half of all the content.
Presented is only a handful of insights. There is always more that can be found, as Ronald Coase, rightly said "Torture the data enough, and it will confess to anything".
Recommendations:
- Netflix should diversify its content genres to target more market segments thus gaining more users.
- Increase in content outside the USA to better attract new users from all around the world.
- Investing in animated content to better cope with COVID-19 lockdowns since animated content can be done remotely.
