__STYLES__
I wanted to explore the frequency of incidents leading to arrests by Providence (RI) Police. The time frame was a 180 day period starting end of Feb 2020. This viz was limited to only relatively minor crime classifications.
The raw data was uploaded , cleaned and analyzed in Excel.
The viz was created using Tableau.
A couple of things stand out. One is that most of the categories had a steady increase into a peak in the month of June. The one exception is larceny from a motor vehicle, which decreased over the same span of time.
Vandalism and malicious damage to property seemed to correlate most closely to Larceny under $1500
Most of the categories seemed to trend downward after a June peak, with the exception of larceny from a vehicle and simple assault and battery. Perhaps the former can be explained by more hours of daylight which could lead to less theft from vehicles.
Vandalism appears to have had the largest amount of arrests. Driving with a suspended/revoked license seems to have had the lowest. Perhaps this can be attributed to the fact that the department prioritizes certain types of calls for assistance over others.
Further study could include all (or most) crime classifcations as well as a longer duration.
