Baseball Hall of Fame Explorer

Baseball HOF Exploratory Dashboard

About this project

Overview:

This was a fun one!

For this project, the intent is to consolidate different datasets on Baseball Hall of Fame inductees from three sources (Baseball-Reference, Baseball Almanac, and Wikipedia), each with their nuances, and combine them into one cleaned-up data source. Then that data was put together into a fun exploratory dashboard sure to delight baseball fans everywhere and inspire deeper questions.

Method:

The data was pulled from the above three listed sites and cleaned/merged in Excel (although, given how non-trivial that turned out to be, Python or Tableau Prep would have been a better choice). The data was then brought into Tableau and, after some exploration, a dashboard was developed.

All project files, including the final cleaned dataset, can be found in my GitHub repository here.

Fun Findings:

  • The Hall really likes pitchers, having inducted 84 of them, which is more than double the next highest category of "Executives," at 40 inductees.
  • Of players inducted (excluding executives, managers, and umpires) by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA), in special elections, and run-offs, both thrid-basemen and center fielders have average vote percents above 90%, while catchers are at the bottom with an average vote percent of 81.4%.

  • The Hall has a preference for players who started their career in the Liveball Era (1921-1942)

Over to you!

Enjoy!
