About this project

Introduction & Challenge Objective:

This challenge asks you to leverage a rich dataset from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) website, covering past Summer and Winter Paralympic Games. The dataset includes detailed information on medal standings, athlete performance, and event details across multiple editions of the Paralympic Games. The task is to create a comprehensive, insightful report that highlights key trends, performance metrics, and interesting facts about the Paralympic Games.

The challenge dataset consists of 2 Excel files: Athletes and Standings.

Tools Used :

Power BI

Data Cleaning:

Few decision making situations were there - deciding on whether to keep the same country name as previous ones or showing the 2 locations of the 1984 summer seasons etc. It was interesting on look through various perspectives.

Dashboard Structure:

This report is structured to deliver key insights through a mix of interactive visuals and storytelling to engage the audience and highlight the spirit of the Paralympic Games.

The report is divided into four main sections, each designed to progressively guide the user from high-level overviews to more detailed insights:

Page 1 - Global Medal Powerhouses

This page introduces the audience to the overall landscape of the Paralympic Games, focusing on the dominance of top-performing nations:

Medal Powerhouses: A view of the countries with the most medals.

Yearly Ranking Shifts: A visual displaying how these rankings have changed over time.

Top 10 Consistency: Highlighting nations that consistently rank in the top 10, setting the stage for their long-term success.

Page 2 - Athletes & Gold Medal Dominance

This section takes the user deeper into the performances of individual athletes and sports:

Global Reach: Highlighting where the games have been hosted.

Paralympic Legends: Profiles of athletes who have become legends in their fields.

Gold Medal Mastery: A focus on the gold medal winners by sport, showcasing athletes who have mastered specific events.

Defining Sports: A breakdown of sports that have historically contributed the most to the Paralympic Games.

Page 3 - Global Participation and Medal Race

Here, the focus shifts to broader trends in participation and competition over time:

Global Participation: A view of how participation has expanded, with countries from around the world contributing to the Games.

Medal Race Over Time: Both yearly and cumulative medal trends of top-performing nations, emphasizing long-term dominance.

Page 4 - Evolution & Host Nation Performance

Evolution of Sports: Insights into how new sports were introduced, contributing to the overall growth of the Games.

Host Nation Advantage: A comparison of the performance of host nations versus non-host countries, exploring whether hosting provides a competitive edge.

Design & Approach:

The design and structure of this report were guided by a few core principles:

Storytelling Through Data: Rather than simply presenting data, the goal was to tell a compelling story that engages the audience. Each section builds on the previous one, providing a narrative that flows from broad to detailed analysis.

Interactive and Visual-First: Interactive elements were key to allowing the user to explore the data. ZoomCharts were used to enable drill-downs and intuitive exploration, giving users a deeper understanding of the trends at play.

User Engagement: The inclusion of filters, tooltips, and drill-throughs ensures that users can engage with the data on their own terms, while still being guided through key insights.

Timeline Navigation: A timeline serves as a storytelling tool, allowing users to interact with the various editions of the Games and revealing details such as host countries, season and a small Interesting info.

Conclusion:

This project pushed me beyond my comfort zone. I’ve typically worked on business-centric dashboards that focus on executive recommendations, but this report allowed me to explore a storytelling/magazine-style format. The challenge of presenting historical data in an engaging, interactive way was both fun and rewarding.
