Sustainable EV Charging Network: India's Green Mobility Infrastructure

About this project

As a data analyst, I delved deep into India's electric vehicle landscape, transforming raw data into actionable insights. My Power BI dashboard is more than just visuals; it's an interactive exploration tool. With dynamic slicers for brand and vehicle model, you can effortlessly drill down into the data. Want to compare charging infrastructure for AtliQ's Scooters versus SUVs? No problem. This dashboard is your electric compass, guiding AtliQ towards a successful India launch. My analysis focused on several key areas including Company's and State Performance.

1. Companies Performance:

  • The EV Market: Dominance vs. Struggle: The electric two-wheeler market is notably polarized. On one end, companies like Battree Electric, Jitendera, and Kinetic Green are struggling, with market shares of 18.2%, 46.3%, and 35% respectively. On the other end, dominant players like Ola Electric, TVS, and Ather are leading the charge, holding substantial market shares of 50.64%, 28.2%, and 21.15%. This divide highlights a competitive landscape where innovation and market strategy play crucial roles in determining success.
  • Charging Ahead: EV Quarterly Sales: The quarterly sales figures indicate a healthy upward trajectory in EV adoption. Starting at 0.39 million in Q1, sales rose to 0.68 million by Q4. This steady increase suggests a growing consumer acceptance and expanding market infrastructure for EVs.
  • Growth Leaders: CAGR Benchmark: Among the prominent market players, Hyundai Motor and MG Motor have demonstrated impressive growth. Hyundai, with a significant CAGR of 24.04%, is particularly noteworthy. The data highlights that despite the elapsed years since entry, these companies have managed to secure substantial EV sales, reflecting strong market positioning and successful penetration strategies.
  • India's Electric Charging: Monthly Sales Figure: In India, the demand for electric charging solutions varies significantly across months. March stands out with the highest sales at 29,000 units, while June sees a notable dip, with sales dropping to 10,000 units. This fluctuation proposes seasonal trends or external factors influencing the charging infrastructure demand.
  • Battle for India's Roads: Electric Carmakers: Tata Motors leads the electric car market in India with 82,000 units sold, showcasing its strong foothold in the sector. Mahindra follows with 39,000 units, while MG Motors, BYD India, and Hyundai trail with 12,000, 2,000, and 2,000 units respectively. The dominant position of Tata Motors and Mahindra can be attributed to their early investments, extensive dealer networks, and broad customer base. In contrast, newer entrants like BYD India and Hyundai have yet to make a significant impact, possibly due to their later market entry or limited local presence.

2. State's Performance:

  • Red Flags for EV Adoption: The penetration of EVs across states showcases a striking disparity. Andhra Pradesh, despite its large market potential, has a notably low penetration rate of just 9,046%. In sharp contrast, Uttar Pradesh lags significantly with a penetration rate of only 2,524%. This stark difference highlights critical barriers to adoption in these regions, such as infrastructure limitations, policy support, or market readiness.
  • When Do EV Sales Soar? A Seasonal Breakdown: The data reveals a clear seasonal pattern in EV sales. March consistently emerges as the peak month across all years from 2022 to 2024, with sales ranging between 7,000 and 8,000 units. This trend may be attributed to fiscal year-end promotions, increased consumer spending, or favorable weather conditions. Conversely, January and February are the lowest months, with sales between 1,000 and 2,000 units, possibly due to post-holiday slowdown or market fatigue after the New Year.
  • Battle for EV Dominance: Karnataka stands out with a robust 48% penetration rate, reflecting its strong adoption of electric vehicles. Meanwhile, Delhi leads with an impressive 133% penetration rate, which may be indicative of high EV adoption relative to the number of vehicles on the road or an aggressive push by local policies. This intense competition underscores the regional variations in EV acceptance and the impact of supportive infrastructure and policies.
  • Geographical Breakdown of Electric Sales Vehicles: The EV market in India is concentrated in a few key states. Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are the top three regions for EV sales, with 0.37 million, 0.29 million, and 0.18 million units sold, respectively. These states benefit from strong infrastructure, favorable policies, and significant consumer interest. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are in close competition, with a narrow sales gap of just 0.10 million units. This indicates a dynamic market environment where slight changes in policy or market strategies can have a notable impact on sales figures. Sikkim, however, presents a troubling scenario with 0 recorded EV sales. This lack of activity could be due to a combination of factors such as inadequate infrastructure, limited market presence, or geographic and economic challenges that hinder the adoption of electric vehicles.

3. Primary Reasons for Choosing 4-Wheeler EVs in 2023 and 2024:

1. Cost Savings:

  • Fuel Savings: With rising fuel prices, 4-wheeler EVs offer significant savings on fuel costs, as electricity is generally cheaper than gasoline or diesel.
  • Lower Maintenance Costs: EVs have fewer moving parts compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, leading to lower maintenance and repair costs.
  • Incentives and Tax Benefits: Government incentives, including tax rebates and subsidies, further reduce the overall cost of purchasing 4-wheeler EVs.

2. Environmental Concerns:

  • Reduced Emissions: Consumers are increasingly concerned about climate change and air pollution. 4-wheeler EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, which appeals to environmentally conscious buyers.
  • Sustainability: The shift towards renewable energy sources for charging further enhances the attractiveness of EVs from an environmental perspective.
  • Government Incentives:
  • Subsidies and Rebates: Various government programs offer substantial subsidies and rebates for EV purchases, which make 4-wheeler EVs more affordable.
  • Tax Benefits: Tax incentives on EVs, such as reduced GST rates and income tax benefits, encourage consumers to choose electric vehicles.

4. Ideal Brand Ambassador for AtliQ Motors:

Potential Candidate: Priyanka Chopra

Reasons:

  • Brand Appeal: Priyanka Chopra has a strong global presence and appeal, which can help AtliQ Motors reach a wider audience.
  • Environmental Advocacy: She is known for her advocacy on environmental issues, aligning well with the values of EVs and sustainability.
  • Influence and Reach: Her influence in both Bollywood and international arenas can enhance brand visibility and credibility.

5. Ideal State for Manufacturing Unit

Best Choice: Karnataka

Reasons:

  • Subsidies: Karnataka offers substantial subsidies and incentives for EV manufacturers.
  • Ease of Doing Business: The state ranks high on ease of doing business metrics, providing a conducive environment for setting up manufacturing units.
  • Infrastructure and Support: Karnataka has a well-developed industrial infrastructure and supportive state policies for the EV sector.
  • Stability in Governance: The state has a stable governance structure that supports long-term business interests.

6. Top 3 Recommendations for AtliQ Motors

  1. Enhance Charging Infrastructure:
  • Invest in or partner with firms to expand the charging network across key regions. This will address range anxiety and support higher EV adoption rates.
  1. Focus on Government Relations:
  • Engage with policymakers to stay updated on subsidies and incentives. Leverage these benefits to make AtliQ Motors’ offerings more attractive and affordable.
  1. Targeted Marketing Campaigns:
  • Develop marketing strategies that highlight the cost savings, environmental benefits, and advanced technology of AtliQ Motors’ vehicles. Utilize influential figures and local ambassadors to build brand credibility and appeal.
