Will Your Plane Be On-Time? is an intriguing attempt to see how fast a powerful, interactive dashboard can be completed and posted for learning and portfolio purposes.
How fast? Turns out pretty fast—thanks to Power BI and Maven Analytics!
In this demo, we’ll play the role of a Data Analyst for the Federal Aviation Administration 🛩️
We’ve been given access to a database containing nearly 2,000,000 commercial flights from major US airports, and our task is to use that data to understand which flights were delayed or canceled, and why.
Using Power BI, we’ll transform the raw data into a user-friendly, interactive dashboard to help stakeholders drill into flight delays and cancellations by airport, airline, day of week, and more.
Along the way, we’ll walk through each step of the business intelligence workflow:
✔️ Load and transform the raw data
✔️ Build a relational data model
✔️ Add calculated columns & DAX measures
✔️ Design a stunning, interactive dashboard

The “out of the box” version 1.0 of this project, “as seen on YouTube,” is shown below.
The visually enhanced version 2.0 of this project is shown below.
Version 2.0 created opportunities for adding and adjusting visual elements, optimizing titles, modifying DAX code, finessing format options, and maximizing the overall UX (user experience.)
Code enhancements became necessary, such as the following DAX FORMAT
function, for functionality troubleshooting and customization purposes—e.g., making greater use of measures in lieu of adding calculated columns.
% Delayed = FORMAT(DIVIDE([Delayed Flights],[Total Flights],"-"), "0%")
The base structure for this dashboard (version 1.0) is expertly guided and the project proved to be a great opportunity for Power BI skill improvement.
Thanks for taking this flight with me!
