About this project

In this project, I have been hired as a Human Resource Specialist for the Seatle Department of Public Works.

Situation: The city recently surveyed approximately 1,500 public works employees to measure job satisfaction and identify opportunities to keep staff motivated and engaged.

Assignment: I have been asked to analyze the survey response data and prepare a visual summary for the HR leadership team.

Objectives:

  1. Explore and profile the data to correctly any quality issues

  2. Prepare and reformat the data for visualization

  3. Visualize the data and identify key insights and recommendations

Key Insights from the Data:

  1. Most employees (about 92%) either agree or strongly agree that they have clear expectations at work, indicating that most of the employees understand what is expected of them, and likely reducing confusion regarding their roles.

  2. Roughly 86% of employees either agree or strongly agree that their supervisor or someone at work cares about them. This high perceived support from supervisors suggests a positive work environment and can lead to increased job satisfaction and loyalty.

  3. About 48% of employees disagree or strongly disagree that they have a best friend at work. This lack of close friendships at work may affect employee engagement and overall workplace satisfaction, potentially leading to higher turnover rates.

  4. Approximately 35% of employees either disagree or strongly disagree that they have received recognition or praise for good work. This finding implies that a significant portion of employees feel unappreciated, which can negatively impact motivation, morale, and productivity.

Recommendations for the HR Team

  1. Enhance Recognition Programs

Develop and implement a structured recognition program to ensure employees are regularly acknowledged for their contributions. This can include monthly awards, shout-outs in team meetings, and personalized thank-you notes. Moreover, HR can conduct workshops focused on creating a culture of recognition, teaching all employees the importance and methods of acknowledging peers' efforts.

  1. Foster Workplace Relationships

Create opportunities for employees to build stronger relationships through team-building activities, corporate or social network events, and collaborative projects.

  1. Maintain a Supportive Environment

Provide training for supervisors on effective communication, empathy, and leadership skills to maintain and further improve their supportive role to sustain current satisfactory levels.

  1. Regular Feedback Mechanisms

Establish regular feedback mechanisms, such as quarterly surveys or one-on-one meetings, to continuously identify employee satisfaction and areas of improvement.
