About this project

Goals:

The primary goals of this project were to:

  1. Identify the most popular train routes within the UK.
  2. Determine peak travel times for better resource allocation.
  3. Analyze revenue generated from different ticket types and classes.
  4. Diagnose on-time performance and understand contributing factors to delays and cancellations.

Business Needs:

As a BI Developer for National Rail, I was tasked with creating an exploratory dashboard that provides comprehensive insights into train travel trends. The business needs included:

  • Enhancing customer satisfaction by understanding travel patterns and addressing delays.
  • Maximizing revenue by analyzing the performance of various ticket types and classes.
  • Improving operational efficiency by identifying peak travel times and high-demand routes.
  • Reducing delays and cancellations by diagnosing the main reasons and implementing corrective measures.

Discovering & Presenting Insights:

  1. Popular Routes:
    • Analyzed the number of bookings per route.
    • Displayed the top departure and arrival stations along with the number of bookings in a table.
    • Used maps to visualize the most popular routes.
  2. Peak Travel Times:
    • Examined the distribution of journeys across different times of the day.
    • Identified peak hours using a time-based histogram.
    • Highlighted the busiest travel times with red to assist in planning and scheduling.
  3. Revenue Analysis:
    • Segmented revenue by ticket type (Advance, Anytime, Off-Peak) and ticket class (Standard, First Class).
    • Used pie charts to show the proportion of revenue from each segment.
    • Displayed revenue trends by month to track performance over time.
  4. On-time Performance:
    • Analyzed reasons for delays and cancellations.
    • Presented the data in matrix format to show the percentage of journeys affected and the number of refund requests.
    • Used pie charts to visualize the distribution of different delay causes.
  5. Geographical Insights:
    • Mapped the routes to provide a geographical context to the data.
    • Highlighted regions with higher delays and cancellations to identify potential areas for improvement.

By integrating these elements into an interactive Power BI dashboard, I provided a powerful tool for National Rail to make data-driven decisions, improve service quality, and enhance customer satisfaction.
