Great American Coffee Survey Result Analysis in Power BI

About this project

Summary of the Survey: The participants in this survey have good coffee knowledge and regularly drink coffee. Their preferred coffee style is black made with the Pour Over or other brewing method. It is found Americans prefer making their coffee at home and there is significant demand for high-quality Home Coffee Brewing Equipments indicating we are currently in the 4th generation of coffee. They opt for lighter roast natural beans in their coffee and visit cafes serving specialty coffee.

Detailed Analysis of the survey results:

  1. 90% of the tasters between the 25 - 44 age group have rated themselves as Intermediate/Expert. With 97% loving the coffee taste and 76% knowing about the origin. The taster population is regular coffee drinkers - 75% have 1-2 cups daily and are ideal candidates for this survey.
  2. 37% of people spend $20-$40 on coffee. Tasters with Pour Over coffee tend to spend more in the $40-$60 bracket.

  5. More than 50% of tasters have coffee at home, leading to a huge market for coffee equipment.
  6. More than 50% of participants have similar roast preferences in the blind test. 54% of tasters love the fermented natural Coffee D over the washed Coffee A beans.
  7. Coffee D & A described as Chocolatey, Fruity/ Nutty with hints of berries. Coffee B & C is described as Chocolatey, Fruity/ Nutty, a little dark, and balanced
  8. Coffee D is most preferred by 37% of tasters, followed by A. Pour-over drinkers highly favored Coffee D. 56% of Latte drinkers opt for Medium/Dark Roast
  9. Acidity is inversely proportional to Bitterness. Coffee D and Coffee A have low bitterness, but more than 40% of tasters rated them High in Acidity.
  10. 60 % of participants prefer Home Brewing Methods - Pour Over, Espresso, French Press, etc. 20% of tasters have spent more than $1000 on brewing equipment in 5 years. Low-priced and cheap-quality products have low satisfaction rates. They indicate Americans' willingness to spend good money on fine quality.
  11. 45% of tasters prefer specialty or local coffee shops followed by large coffee chains (20%). 60% of participants are willing to pay between $6-$10 for a cup. Overall 42% are unsatisfied with the value for money they get for coffee purchased at the cafe.

Data Preparation and Cleansing:

I divided the dataset into 3 queries - Single Select, Multi Select, and Coffee Tasting Results

  • Multi-select - I split multiple answers to identify each answer selected uniquely. Cleaned and trimmed the split rows for analysis.
  • Coffee Tasting Results - I unpivoted the results of the blind test to identify the acidic and bitter tones of the coffee and also the preferred among the four for correct use of the fields in charts and graphs visualizing the results.
  • Single select - I kept the single select answers separate, as they didn't need any major transformations, just some cleaning and replacing of certain values.
