Dimensions & Measures

A stacked area chart was the perfect choice to show composition over time about revenue between physical and digital music formats.

After applying data visualization principles and best practices, like:

  • eliminate clutter and noise to facilitate understanding
  • highlight relevant data points
  • conscious use of colors
  • use of title and comments to tell a clear story

this is the final result:

undefinedConclusions

  • US Music market total revenues increased over time until it reached a peak in 1999
  • In 2019 revenues are half of what they were in their peak, and Digital formats dominate the music industry
  • In recent years, revenues have seen rapid growth which could indicate a return to past levels
