Influencing Factors on Heart Disease and Hypertension

Power Bi Dashboard

About this project

BACKGROUND

Perform an exploratory analysis using healthcare patients’ datasets from Epic EHR system to develop an interactive dashboard solution that will provide insight into the key influencing factors on heart disease and hypertension.

GOAL

Execute an end-to-end data analytics project by performing ETL process to build an interactive dashboard solution that will provide insight into the key influencing factors on heart disease and hypertension

METHODOLOGY

I first uploaded the Excel file to Power Bi. Using the DAX function, I created more primary and secondary metrics necessary for a more thorough analysis.

Using appropriate charts and graphs to represent the data points and developed a dashboard solution with interactive slicers.

KEY INSIGHTS

Proportion of patients -There are 18,128 patients in total. Of these, 4.31%(894) had heart disease and 8.35%(1733) are hypertensive. 87.34% (15,501) of patients are without hypertension and heart disease

Smoking Status -Only 17.02% (295) of hypertensive patients smoke and 20.02% (179) of patients with heart disease smoke. More people who formerly smoked; 428 (24.7%) are hypertensive, and 288 (32.21%) have heart disease which could have contributed to the development of the disease. For hypertensive patients, the most number(almost half) never smoked while for those with heart disease the most numbers were former smokers (one third). n/a refers to Unknown data

Impact of BMI -For both diseases, the obese BMI class had the biggest percentages – Heart disease (52.3%), Hypertension (60.58%). This is followed by the overweight class in both cases; more for heart disease than hypertension. The WHO BMI classification was used

Most affected age-group

-For Heart disease, the most affected group is 71-80 years, followed by 61-70 and slightly distant 51-60. For Hypertension, the most affected is 61-70 years, followed very closely by 71-80 and then 51-60. The least affected are 30 and below in both diseases. Thus the risk for both diseases increases with age with most of the numbers being between ages 51 -80.

Effects of work type

-Private: Hypertensive patients are 58.47%(1013), most between the ages of 51-60 and those with heart disease 54.47%(487), and most aged between 71-80. Both diseases have over 50% of people obese.

Self-employed: Hypertensive patients are 26.31% (456) and those with heart disease 31.32%(280) and both are within the ages of 71-80. Both diseases have slightly under 50% of people obese.

Govt job: Hypertensive patients are 15.60%(261) and most between the ages of 61-70 and those with heart disease 14.09%(126) and most aged between 51-60. Both diseases have over 60% of people obese.

‘Never worked’ and ‘Children’ have little effect on the diseases

RECOMMENDATION

  1. Having smoked before predisposes one to hypertension and heart disease as one ages
  2. High BMI (obese and overweight) is highly related to getting both hypertension and heart disease
  3. Increase in age is also directly proportional to the risk of developing both diseases, especially from 61 and above
  4. Sex has some influence on both diseases. There are slightly more women with hypertension than men while the opposite is the same with heart disease with some significant difference
  5. The type of work one does has a significant effect on the risk of getting both diseases. In decreasing order of the number of patients affected, we have private, employed, and govt. job. The rest do not.
  6. Average glucose level has a very slight influence on both conditions.
  7. There are more chances of having hypertension if you have a heart disease
