As part of the Microsoft Power BI Desktop for Business Intelligence (2023) course by Maven Analytics on Udemy, I undertook an in-depth project titled ‘Adventure Works.’ The project encompassed the end-to-end development of a comprehensive business intelligence solution, offering valuable insights into the operational performance of Adventure Works, a prominent global manufacturing company specializing in cycling equipment, clothing and accessories.
Project Scope The primary objectives of the project were to track key performance indicators (KPIs), facilitate regional performance comparisons, analyze product-level trends, and identify high-value customers within Adventure Works. The project was based on real-world data derived from raw CSV files provided by Maven Analytics.
Methodology The project involved a meticulous step-by-step approach, focusing on Data extraction (Extraction of data from CSV files using Power Query), Data Cleaning (Stringent data cleaning processes were applied, rectifying data types, handling null values, eliminating duplicates, and promoting headers for consistency), Data Transformation (Removing rows and columns-blanks, duplicates, sorting, splitting columns, Unpivoting and pivoting columns, appending data, merging data, grouping and aggregating), Data Modeling (An advanced data model was constructed post-ETL, featuring both star and snowflake schema designs. This involved establishing vital one-to-many relationships between data tables), Data processing (Creation of explicit measures using Data Analysis Expressions (DAX), as well as the addition of calculated columns), and Data Visualization & Reporting (The project culminated in the development of an interactive and comprehensive dashboard. This dashboard encompassed dedicated sections for product insights, geospatial analyses, and customer information).
Key Insights
Top-Performing Category: The "Accessories" category emerges as the highest-performing product category, with an impressive 17,000 orders. It boasts a commendable 2.0% return rate and generates substantial revenue, amounting to $906,673. This insight underscores the significance of Accessories within Adventure Works' products and suggests potential areas for further growth and optimization.
Bikes Exhibit High Return Rate: Among all product categories sold, "Bikes" notably stands out with the highest return rate, reaching 3.18%. This insight calls attention to the need for a closer examination of the Bikes category, potentially identifying factors contributing to this elevated return rate and opportunities for improvement in product quality or customer satisfaction.
Regional Order Distribution: The analysis highlights the dominance of the United States in terms of total orders, surpassing other regions including Canada, Australia, and Europe.
