Education Management

About this project

Introduction:

The Fort Vermilion School Division (FVSD) is a governmental organization responsible for overseeing schools in the northwestern corner of Alberta, Canada. FVSD is renowned for their commitment to data-driven planning and decision-making to empower every student with equal opportunities and care in education. The task is to delve deep into educational data and assist the School Division with strategic planning for assessments, comprehending student performance, and determining the necessary teacher resources for future enhancements.

Background Information:

The school year is split into 3 semesters (Fall, Winter and Spring). Each student is assessed each semester using three test (assessment) types - TOSREC, TOWRE and TOSWRF - using standard score system. For each test there is a known associated cost per student.

Based on the received score, students are split into groups indicating they performance level. Two types of grouping are used: 1) assessment level (very poor, at risk, good etc.) 2) assessment level grouping (below average or average and above). Students with poor test results are required to take additional classes (Intervention groups), where each group contains 5 or 10 students depending on the test score, and require additional teacher resources.

About the Dataset:

The dataset is a Excel file 6 sheets with details on School, Students, Teachers, Assessment Level, types and the Students results with #44483 records.

Tools Used:

Power BI

Phases involved:

The overall process is divided into 2 phases - Data Preparation, and Data Analysis & Visualization.

Phase 1: Data Cleaning and Preparation:

The dataset was almost clean, there were just minor changes made and data model was created and the relationship was established.

Assumptions / Caveat, There were several students with school ID that did not belong to the school ID from the school table, hence those were removed.

The necessary DAX measures were created and the data was ready for Visualization.

Phase 2: Data Analysis & Visualization:

I have designed a 2-page dashboard. With a few slicers and buttons, it will help to explore a ton of details and gain Insights!

Questions Analysed and their Insights:

  • No of Students - 3210 (Students who took the Exams)
  • No of Schools - 21
  • No of Teachers - 314
  • Average Score - 93.57
  • Projected Cost for Winter 23 / 24 based on Fall 23 / 24 results - $ 7493.1
  • Teachers required for Tier 2 Intervention Groups (Winter 23 / 24)- 100 (Number of students in the group 1000)
  • Teachers required for Tier 3 Intervention Groups (Winter 23 / 24)- 325 (Number of students in the group 1621)

Conclusion (Personal Experience):

I enjoyed the whole process from Data Preparation to Analysis and Visualization. Working on real use cases is always interesting. Being a newbie to PowerBI and exploring the vastness of it, I learn something new in every project. Looking forward to applying more in the upcoming projects.
