About this project

1. About Dataset

Information on over 375,000 Kickstarter projects spanning 2009 to 2017, encompassing project name, category, launch date, deadline, goal, pledged amount, number of backers, project status, and country.

2. About the Company

Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform that enables individuals and businesses to raise funds for creative projects by collecting contributions from a large number of people. Founded in 2009, Kickstarter has facilitated the funding of various endeavors, including films, music albums, technological innovations, and more. Project creators set funding goals and offer rewards or incentives to backers based on their contribution levels. If a project reaches or exceeds its funding goal within a specified timeframe, it receives the pledged funds, and backers get the promised rewards. If the goal is not met, no funds are collected. Kickstarter has become a popular avenue for bringing innovative ideas to life through collective support.

3. Recommended Analysis

  1. Which category has the highest success percentage? How many projects have been successful?
  2. What project with a goal over $1,000 USD, had the biggest Goal Completion % (Pledged / Goal)? How much money was pledged?
  3. Can you identify any trends in project success rates over the years?
  4. As an investor, what types of projects should you be looking at to guarantee future success?

4. My Approaches

In this project, my focus is primarily on the visualization I created based on the analysis recommendations from the Maven Analytics team. To address the questions raised above, I find it necessary to present several visual elements to stakeholders and provide additional or more detailed information using the bookmark feature.

4.1. Calculating Project Success Rate

This project guides the analyst to delve into the success of Kickstarter projects within the timeframe of 2009 to 2017. To achieve this, I only need to calculate the number of successful and failed projects. Projects with live, suspended, and cancelled statuses are excluded from some analyses, but their respective figures are still provided for informational purposes.

4.2. Dashboard Framework

In designing a dashboard, I employ the Minto Pyramid Principle. This principle aids me in creating a dashboard that is easily comprehensible for the audience by following a typical reading guide (from left to right, top to bottom). Below is the framework of my dashboard:

undefinedGenerally, this dashboard is divided into three sections for its main content. In the header section, I incorporated filters based on country and added information buttons to provide details about the approach I took in analyzing this case study. In total, there are four information buttons linked with bookmark features, offering additional or more detailed information. This approach aims to conserve space on the dashboard while retaining essential content without overwhelming the viewer with excessive details.

Section 1 contains general information, following the pyramid principle where the top part is filled with key answers. In this context, I include key recommendations at the very beginning (which addresses question 4), followed by information about the overall Kickstarter projects and the number of projects based on their status. The final element in Section 1 provides information on the total crowdfunding amount raised during that period compared to the funding goal, total backers, and the overall project success rate.

In the second section, we delve into more detailed aspects, showcasing two key elements: project success rates based on crowdfunding duration and project success rates over the years. This section addresses questions 3 and 4, exploring trends over time and identifying indicators for projects with high success rates.

Within the "Project Success Rates Over The Years" graph, I've included information buttons to provide additional insights into the breakdown based on categories. This breakdown illustrates which categories contribute the most to the increase in the number of successful projects over the 9-year span of Kickstarter's journey.

In the third section, there are two visual elements that address questions 1 and 2. The bar chart illustrating the number of successful and failed projects based on categories features information buttons to provide more detailed insights. This includes a breakdown of categories into subcategories that can be sorted by the most successful projects or the highest success rates.

In the table displaying the top 20 projects with the highest % goal completion and funding goal greater than $1,000, I've included information buttons to provide trivia about two projects: Exploding Kittens, with the highest % goal completion, and COOLEST COOLER, the most funded project that ended tragically.
