About this project

This dataset seeks to provide insights into the 1853 Stockholm cholera outbreak. This was a severe outbreak of cholera which occurred in Stockholm, Sweden in 1853 as part of the third cholera pandemic. It killed about 3,000 people.

This dataset focuses on the records from the archives of St. Catherines Parish, about the large cholera outbreak in late August 1853. About 3% of the population died within a couple of weeks. Poor parts of the city, such as St Catherine parish was hit very hard.

Insights:

  1. The number of deaths remained relatively constant between Tuesday, August 23, 1853 and Monday, November 21, 1853.

  2. The number of deaths started trending up on Wednesday, September 28, 1853, rising by 25.00% (1) in 7 days.

  3. The number of deaths dropped from 4 to 3 during its steepest decline between Thursday, September 22, 1853 and Monday, September 26, 1853.

  4. Adults (31 - 55 Yrs) had the highest Number of Deaths at 106, followed by Kids (0 - 13 Yrs), Elderly (56 - 100 Yrs), and Youth (14 - 30 Yrs).

  5. Adults (31 - 55 Yrs) accounted for 42.74% of Number of Deaths.

  6. Across all 7 Professions, the number of deaths ranged from 7 to 10.

  7. At 183, September had the highest Number of Deaths and was 1,563.64% higher than November, which had the lowest Number of Deaths at 11.

  8. September had the highest Number of Deaths at 183, followed by October, August, and November.

  9. September accounted for 73.79% of Number of Deaths.

  10. Across all 4 Months, Number of Deaths ranged from 11 to 183.

  11. Number of Deaths for Women (130) was higher than Men (118).

  12. Women accounted for 52.42% of Number of Deaths.
