Background
In 2015 Apple set a goal to have reduced its emissions by 75% in the year 2030. I aimed to explore available data from Apple surrounding this goal and visualize their progress and trajectory towards the goal.
Data
The data is a breakdown of Apple's greenhouse gas emissions from 2015 to 2022 as they aim to reach net zero emissions by 2030. It includes the following key parameters;
- Greenhouse gas emissions and their sources within the company
- Product Carbon footprint
- Financial metrics such as market capitalization and revenue
Insights and Observations
- Apple's emissions efforts are on track to meet the 75% target a few years earlier than 2030 if the current trajectory is maintained
- Apple has shown consistent financial growth since embarking on its net zero mission
- 98% of all Apple emissions come from their product lifecycle, only 2% from corporate activity
- While emissions are consistently lowering in most product lifecycle processes, product transportation emissions have been on the rise; having risen by 46% since 2015
- Product carbon footprint has been steadily declining since 2020 after having peaked and plateaued between 2017 and 2019
