LEGO Showroom

About this project

OBJECTIVE

For the Maven LEGO Challenge, you'll need to stack your imagination and analytical prowess to piece together an interactive dashboard or visual that lets users explore the history and evolution of LEGO sets from the past 5 decades DATA SET.

The provided data contains:

  • An Excel file with a data dictionary
  • An Excel file with 18459# of records in 14 fields that contain the published LEGO Sets from 1970 - 1922. Providing information about the name, the number of pieces and the number of Minifigures. As well as the Themes, Theme Groups and Subthemes.

Theme Group

The Groups are Groups like Adventure, Historical, Licensed ort Arts and Crafts.

Themes

The Themes are Subgroups of the Theme Group. For Adventure this is for example Agents, Alpha Team and Aqua Raiders.

Subthemes

The Subthemes are Subthemes to the Themes. For the example with the Alpha Team, the Subthemes are different Missions from the Alpha Team.

Pieces

Number of pieces in the LEGO Set.

Minifigures

Number of Minifigures in the Set.

BUILDING THE DASHBOARD

Following the objective, I wanted to create a dashboard which provides information about the most expensive Lego Set as well as the Set with the highest number of pieces of Minifigures. But I also wanted to give an overview about the financial numbers and the most important LEGO milestones. (Tahks a lot for the tutoril here Data Training. io) What turned out to be a challenge itself. Because I wanted to keep the dashboard in a plaful way.

Design & Visualization

The Second goal was to create a little Showroom to give the awesome LEGO Sets the Stage they deserve. For that I remembered an awesome dashboard of Injae Park, showing Nike Shoes. I went along with the tutorial to use the new slices along with the new cards to build some interaction in the dashboard. This should give the user the possibility to explore the LEGO world themselves.

SUMMARY, PERSONAL LEARNINGS AND CHALLENGES

It was a real nice project to find out how a small showcase can be combined with also showing some basic data. But I also saw that the possibilities of the showroom are limited to the quality of the linked pictures. So as always in data, you can only work with what you get. I would have liked the showroom a little bit more fancy, but as the pictures had a white background it would have been necessary to remove the background.

As always I am open to feedback and any questions.

I hope you enjoy the LEGO showroom.

Best, Jasmin
