About this project

About the Project

This project is built with the analysts and Management team in mind and to showcase the popularity, growth, and diversity of LEGO sets over time. Data are summarized clearly for a quick actionable insight to be derived from the dashboard.

Bi tools:

MS Excel

Data Source:

The data was derived from the Maven Analytics (the official dataset for the Maven LEGO challenge) a LEGO set released from 1970 to 2022.

Approach

Keeping things simple and clear, the report is presented as follows:

ü A single page is used which contains the total number of pieces, a details panel, charts, filters, and key insights.

ü High-level reporting with additional context.

ü The analysis was done mostly by decade but further yearly insights can also be fetched on the line chart and the scrollable table based on the decade selection.

ü Also, the report covers; theme, category, theme group, year, and number of pieces.

ü Though the recommended age was not included in the dashboard, I still see the importance of speaking about that at the end.

The structure of the Project.

Ultimately, I want to showcase the popularity, growth, and diversity of LEGO sets over time, so the Dashboard is structured as:

1. The Title:

Exploring LEGO Sets Across 5 Decades.

2. Details Panel:

To make the Dashboard flow with the title, the details panel provides more information about the LEGO Sets selected based on decade. The panel displays some selected set’s images that were launched or celebrated, brief information about the selected decade (a brief history/ event of that decade, name of the theme/ Event that the image is showing, the selected theme decade, and the number of themes in the decade selected.

3. Bar and Doughnut Charts

Bar charts were used to show the number of pieces of the sets by category on the first chart and the number of pieces by decade is presented on the second chart and the highest category and decade are highlighted with darker colors. Also, percentages of the highest category and decade are again presented in a doughnut chart. Accompanied by additional contexts.

4. Line Chart

The line chart further breaks the selected decade into years within the decade and shows the yearly trend of the data set pieces thereby providing the end user with additional insights.

5. The scrollable Table

Like the line chart, a scrollable data table is included in the dashboard, it provides the user with more information to explore at their reach. They can further see information about a particular theme, its category, theme group, a specific year, and the corresponding number of pieces on a given row at a time.

KEY INSIGHTS

ü Normal theme category can be seen as one of the oldest theme categories and there were only 3 categories in the 1970s.

ü The total number of set pieces has been on the increase steadily for the five decades.

ü New theme categories were introduced in the later decades

CONCLUSION

As I stated earlier above about the minimum age recommended by LEGO, I found this very interesting in my research about the LEGO Sets, though everybody can play, the guideline is very significant.

The minimum age recommended is a guideline provided by LEGO to help users determine the appropriate age range for a particular set. This recommendation is based on the complexity of the building instructions, the level of fine motor skills required, and the overall suitability of the set's content for different age groups.

LEGO sets are designed to provide an engaging and enjoyable building experience while also being safe for users of a certain age. The minimum age recommendation helps ensure that children can easily handle the bricks and follow the building instructions without frustration. It also takes into account any potential hazards or small parts that may be present in the set.

Keep in mind that the minimum age recommendation is just a suggestion and individual children's abilities and interests may vary. It's always a good idea to consider a child's skill level and maturity when choosing a LEGO set.

Lastly, by putting together the data set with a visually appealing and user-friendly interface, users will be able to explore and understand the history and evolution of LEGO Sets over the 5 decades engagingly and interactively.
